Guillaume Rocheron, a former student of École Méliès (Class of 2002), has been awarded the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for the second time! He first received the award in 2013 for his work on Life of Pi, and again in 2020 for the film 1917.
A second Oscar for Guillaume Rocheron
At 39, French visual effects supervisor Guillaume Rocheron received his second statuette in this category, after the one he earned in 2013 for Life of Pi, directed by Ang Lee. This year, he received an Oscar alongside Greg Butler and Dominic Tuohy for his work on the film 1917, directed by Sam Mendes.
Guillaume Rocheron graduated from École Méliès in 2003 and began his career in Paris at Buf Compagnie, where he worked on Panic Room (directed by David Fincher) and Batman Begins (directed by Christopher Nolan). In 2005, he joined the UK company MPC (Moving Picture Company) as a senior technical director, then CG supervisor. He also worked on X-Men: The Last Stand (directed by Brett Ratner) and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (directed by David Yates).
In 2010, he became VFX supervisor for Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (directed by Chris Columbus). In 2013, his work on Life of Pi with Bill Westenhofer and Erik-Jan de Boer earned a Visual Effects Society Award, an Oscar, and a BAFTA Award. Before 1917, he contributed to the visual effects of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (directed by Zack Snyder), Godzilla (directed by Gareth Edwards), and Ghost in the Shell (directed by Rupert Sanders).
