Located in Orly (Val-de-Marne), the École Méliès is a higher education institution which, since 1999, has been training future Image Artisans. It has seen many renowned alumni pass through its doors, some of whom have won Oscars. A real success story for this school, which continuously invests in new technologies and develops new programmes.
By the end of 2024, a virtual set will be created in partnership with the multinational Sony. This innovative technology will make it possible to replace the traditional green screen in certain shooting situations.
The institution has become a key player in the animation sector. The École Méliès was awarded the “La Grande Fabrique de l’Image” label as part of the France 2030 investment plan, alongside the Bry-sur-Marne studios and INA.
“We have received several million euros to set up a joint Master’s degree with Université Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC) and INA, and to invest in new equipment,” explains the school’s general director.
Multiple Oscars under their belt
By the end of the year, this virtual set will become a reality, still in collaboration with Sony. It will, for instance, make it possible to replace green screens in car scenes. The school has also established itself as a genuine third place: open 24/7, it welcomes both students and professionals in continuing education, particularly on new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
The goal? To build a bridge between students and their future employers.
Among the 1,500 alumni, some have won Oscars. This is the case for Guillaume Rocheron, who was awarded in the “Best Visual Effects” category for Life of Pi in 2013, then for 1917 in 2020. Others, such as Jonathan Del Val, have directed feature films, including the animated movie The Secret Life of Pets 2.
